Roger Bacon — alchemy in the Opus Majus

The Franciscan Roger Bacon devotes part of his Opus Majus to alchemy, dividing it into "speculative" (the theory of the elements) and "practical" (the making of gold and of medicines that prolong life). He frames it as a science to be tested, not merely believed.
