"The Bummer", illustration from "A Peep at Washoe" by J. Ross Browne, in Harper's Monthly Magazine, December 1860. A "bummer" was a man who had made his fortune mining and was now at leisure. This would be in California at the start of his story, before Browne journeys to other gold and silver mining areas.
