An 1853 likeness by Isaac Wallis Baker of a Cantonese miner working the California diggings. Thousands of men from Guangdong reached San Francisco in the Gold Rush years, and the city became the entry point and commercial base for Chinese labour across the state. Held by the Oakland Museum of California.
