A whole-plate daguerreotype by George H. Johnson showing miners at work on the American River near Sacramento. The river was where James Marshall's 1848 discovery began the rush that turned San Francisco from a village into a port city. Photographs made on the diggings this early are rare, since the daguerreotype process demanded equipment few miners carried.
