A Native woman panning for gold in the diggings

An illustration of a Native American woman working a pan at a California claim during the gold rush. Native labour was widely used and widely coerced in the early diggings, though the artist and exact origin of this image are not recorded. It survives as one of the few period depictions of an Indigenous woman at the workings.
