First Transatlantic Cable
2005
Cyrus West Field's Anglo-American Telegraph Company lands the first transatlantic submarine cable between Valentia, Ireland and Heart's Content, Newfoundland. Queen Victoria messages President Buchanan on August 16. The cable fails within weeks but the principle is proven; a working cable is laid in 1866. The subject dates from 1858; this photograph was taken in 2005.
