Marconi Patents Wireless Telegraphy
1896
Guglielmo Marconi, 22, files British Patent 12039 — "Improvements in Transmitting Electrical Impulses and Signals" — describing the first practical wireless telegraph. By 1901 he transmits the letter "S" across the Atlantic from Poldhu, Cornwall to St. John's, Newfoundland. Hertz's "no use whatsoever" becomes a global industry.
