Token Accounting in Mesopotamia

Clay tokens — cones, spheres, disks — used in the Fertile Crescent to track grain, livestock, oil. Each shape stood for a quantity of a thing. Tokens were sealed inside clay envelopes (bullae) and the envelope's surface impressed with the count. By 3500 BC the envelope itself becomes the message: cuneiform.
