Papyrus
c. 2400 BC
The Egyptians strip the stems of Cyperus papyrus, lay them in two perpendicular layers, press them flat. The result is a thin sheet light enough to roll, durable enough to last 4,000 years in dry conditions. The Egyptian state will guard papyrus as a strategic export until Rome takes the trade.
