2005
Jeff Bezos in 2005, ten years after launching Amazon out of a Seattle garage as an online bookstore. Three sites founded within five months of each other in 1995 turn the web into a commercial substrate: Amazon launches as an online bookstore in July; eBay (then AuctionWeb) goes live on Labor Day weekend; Craigslist starts as a San Francisco email list in March and incorporates as a company in 1999. The subject dates from 1995; this photograph was taken in 2005.
