Egyptian Hieroglyphs

A logographic and alphabetic system painted onto temple walls, carved into stone, and brushed onto papyrus scrolls. Used for religious texts, royal proclamations, and accounting. Reading is restricted to scribes; the script will not be deciphered by Europeans until Champollion cracks the Rosetta Stone in 1822.
