Quipu: the Knot-Record

The Inca and their Andean predecessors keep census and tax records in knotted cords. Position, knot type, ply direction, and color all carry meaning. The Spanish later burn most surviving quipus as heretical objects. A few hundred remain in museums; many are still partially unread.
