Tim Berners-Lee Proposes the Web

In March 1989 Tim Berners-Lee, a physicist at CERN, circulates a memo proposing a hypertext "web" of linked documents. By late 1990 he has built the first web server, browser and page — inventing the World Wide Web that would become the defining medium of the age.
