The Han Dynasty court official Cai Lun standardises a process for making paper from mulberry bark, hemp, rags, and fishing nets. The technology spreads slowly westward — reaching Baghdad in 793, Spain in 1056, England in 1490 — replacing parchment as the substrate that the printing press will need.
