Aldabra
Aldabra is the world's second-largest raised coral atoll — a 34 km ring of razor-sharp fossil limestone and mangrove lagoon 1,150 km southwest of Mahé, so hostile to landing that it survived the age of sail nearly intact. It is the last refuge of the Indian Ocean's giant tortoises, some 100,000 of them, alongside the region's last flightless bird and the largest frigatebird colony in the Indian Ocean. Twice it has been saved by people who spoke up — by Darwin's petition in 1874 and by the scientists who stopped a military airfield in 1967 — and this archive follows that story to the third fight, the one @friendsofaldabra is running right now against a luxury resort on the island next door.

- — Aldabra is one of the most biodiverse places on earth - and it has the designations to…. prove it. These include: @unesco World Heritage Site, RAMSAR wetland (@conventiononwetlands), @keybiodiversity area, Important Shark and Ray Area (@iucnshark) and Important Marine Mammal Area (imma_network). Protected areas are one of the most powerful tools we have for biodiversity. When we designate somewhere as protected, we’re saying: this place matters more than profit. It works. - — Did you know that tortoises are actually turtles too?. ? 💚 This World Turtle Day, we highlight a couple of the greatest turtle conservation stories on Earth: Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles. 🇸🇨 Aldabra is the only place where Aldabra giant tortoises still exist in the wild naturally. Once pushed to the brink of extinction, these giants now boast being the largest population of giant tortoise population in the world; all thanks to long-term conservation and habitat protection. 🌊 Aldabra is also one of the most important nesting sites for green sea turtles in the Western Indian Ocean. Studies have shown that nesting activity has increased by an estimated 410−665% since 1968 (Pritchard et al. 2022) – an extraordinary sign of population recovery after historical overexploitation. Shy and notoriously elusive, dugongs rarely make contact with humans, making encounters like this especially memorable. - — BREAKING NEWS: The Commission of Inquiry has officially submitted its final report on…. Assomption Island to President Patrick Herminie. The report spans more than 400 pages, including over 100 pages dedicated to environmental issues. We understand it is expected to be made public before the end of the month. According to the Commissioner, the findings confirm that there was a clear need for this investigation. The report identifies environmental breaches, failures in oversight, and indications of executive interference, with several matters referred for further investigation. For Friends of Aldabra, these findings reinforce what we have been saying all along: the Assomption hotel development has come at a significant cost to the fragile ecosystems of Assomption and Aldabra, and to the unique wildlife that depends on them. The damage already caused is deeply concerning, and continued development risks causing further irreversible harm. We call on the Government to: 🛑 Halt the development on Assomption once and for all. 📄 Publish the full report and the Commission’s recommendations once the response period has concluded ❓ Clarify whether any hotel construction or related works are still taking place on the island The future of Assomption and Aldabra cannot be decided behind closed doors. The public deserves transparency, accountability, and decisive action.

What we did get - by mistake - was an email from the CEO of the institution mandated to protect Aldabra (@sif_seychelles): “UNESCO will not entertain them.” UNESCO’s own World Heritage Centre says “we must empower young people to protect” World Heritage. Apparently that only applies when it’s convenient. The @iucn_official - UNESCO’s own scientific adviser on World Heritage matters - has rated the hotel development threatening Aldabra a “high threat.” Seychellois and international scientists have raised concerns. Seychellois communities have spoken out. And still, the door is closed. This isn’t just about Aldabra. It’s about whether “protecting shared natural heritage” and “empowering youth” are genuine commitments - or just good PR. Tell UNESCO that’s not good enough. - — How many green sea turtles can you spot?. ? 💚 On one trip through Aldabra’s lagoon and mangroves: green sea turtles, a stingray, a lemon shark, red-footed boobies. Different species sharing the same space. This is their home. This is what a healthy ecosystem looks like. On World Sea Turtle Day, we think about everything a sea turtle faces just to survive. They hatch here, swim thousands of miles across the ocean, and then - years, sometimes decades later - find their way back to lay their own eggs. That instinct, that journey, depends on places like this still being here. 🌊 Aldabra’s remoteness has preserved it. There are places where we need to draw a line and accept that some things matter more than short term profit.. - — Why are people losing trust in UNESCO?. ? It could be because of this… UNESCO says “we are convinced that engaging young people in decisions that affect them is not just a matter of right, it’s a matter of principle”. Yet for nearly two years our efforts to inform them of the risks facing one of their own World Heritage sites, has been met with silence. The most we’ve heard is this, an - accidental - email from @sif_seychelles (@unesco’s local partner in Seychelles) saying “UNESCO will not entertain them”. What does that say about UNESCO? What is the point of the institution if they don’t actually help to protect the places they claim to care about? Scientists, conservationists, local citizens and youth advocates have repeatedly called for stronger action to protect this irreplaceable World Heritage Site. We’ve written, campaigned, gathered evidence and asked questions. Still, no meaningful engagement. David Attenborough called Aldabra Atoll “one of the world’s greatest surviving natural treasures”. UNESCO speaks up 🔈‼️ Aldabra Atoll, a coral ecosystem in the outer islands of Seychelles, has been under severe threat for 2 years. A Qatari-funded @rosewoodhotels has been bulldozing neighbouring Assomption Island, and local and international scientists and conservationists have been sounding the alarm for YEARS. Since the very beginning, we have been contacting @unesco @unescoworldheritage to support our on-the-ground and global efforts. We’ve asked them to speak up in support, to take action, to do something…ANYTHING! But they’ve been completely silent about the inevitable destruction of one of their most precious sites, which homes 400 species found nowhere else in the world. We’ve been campaigning for 2 years to protect this area, and 2 weeks ago a national investigation revealed that members of the Seychelles government intervened, helping override due process, influence independent authorities and accelerate permits to allow the construction to move forward quickly. Now - on Police Bay, Mahé - conversations are underway for another luxury hotel development, which would privatise one of the last remaining wild places Seychellois can go to enjoy their natural heritage. - — World Heritage Sites are recognized as the best the world has to offer.. @UNESCO World Heritage Sites are recognized as the best the world has to offer. Places like the Galápagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef are chosen for their outstanding biodiversity and conservation value. It makes sense to protect them. So why is UNESCO seemingly unbothered by a luxury resort development threatening one of their sites, Aldabra Atoll? UNESCO itself calls Aldabra one of the most important habitats on Earth for studying evolution and ecology, prized for its remoteness and its history of staying untouched by humans. A resort now under construction on Assomption Island, just 27 km away, is threatening all of that. The Committee just wrapped its 48th session in Busan, adding six sites to the List of World Heritage in Danger. Aldabra wasn’t mentioned. We cosigned a letter with @FriendsOfAldabra urging UNESCO to investigate, but nothing came of it. Why? Pristine ecosystems like this are increasingly rare. - — A Hundred Thousand Tortoises and a Contested Neighbour. Aldabra today carries roughly 100,000 giant tortoises — about four times the entire Galápagos population — the largest frigatebird colony in the Indian Ocean, a recovering green turtle rookery and a rediscovered endemic snail, all managed by SIF under a strict permit system and a few hundred visitors a year. The unresolved question is next door: what gets built on Assomption, 27 km upwind of the most intact raised atoll on Earth.
