The instrument is a modular analog video processor with patch-cable architecture, similar in concept to the Moog music synthesizer but operating on video signals instead of audio. Its modules perform colorizing, keying, oscillating, delaying, and other signal transformations; the artist patches modules to create video effects in real time. The system is performed live, not programmed. Sandin made a specific decision that distinguishes the IP from comparable instruments. He published the complete schematics and made the design freely available — anyone could build their own Image Processor from Sandin's plans, without paying him or seeking licensing. Dozens of Image Processors were built at universities, artist-run centers, and studios across North America in the 1970s and early 1980s. The instrument became, by deliberate design, a shared tool rather than a proprietary product. This act of deliberate open-sourcing — in 1973, before the term open-source existed — is one of the cleanest examples of artist-as-infrastructure-provider in the field. The Sandin IP's widespread adoption shaped what video art looked like through the 1970s. Many classic works of video art from that period were made with Sandin IPs built from the published schematics. Sandin continues to work at EVL, where he has collaborated on CAVE virtual-reality systems and other research projects across decades. He is still living. Lore Sandin trained as a physicist before turning to video and visual art. The Sandin IP schematics were distributed through a technical manual that EVL made available at minimal cost. The instrument's adoption was shaped by artist-residency programs at Chicago's Communications Arts studios and similar venues across North America. Sandin's later work on the CAVE virtual-reality environment (1992) with Thomas DeFanti extended his systems-building approach into immersive VR.
