A shape grammar defines a set of possible shapes and a set of transformation rules; starting from an initial shape, the grammar produces new shapes by recursively applying the rules, and the space of all possible outputs is the grammar's language. The framework is directly analogous to Chomsky's generative linguistics but applied to visual rather than linguistic material. Shape grammars had enormous theoretical impact across architecture, design, and generative art. Stiny and Gips demonstrated that historical styles — Palladian villas, Frank Lloyd Wright prairie houses, Islamic tiling patterns — could be described as shape grammars, and that new instances in each style could be generated from the grammar. The approach has been applied to urban-design generation, product-design research, and formal aesthetic analysis across multiple decades. Stiny's subsequent work — particularly his 2006 book Shape: Talking about Seeing and Doing — extended shape grammars into more philosophically sophisticated territory, engaging with Wittgensteinian language philosophy and with perceptual psychology. He has taught at MIT since 1993. The 1971 paper's importance to this archive is structural: shape grammars are the theoretical framework within which much subsequent generative-design and computational-art work has been formally legible. Stiny and Gips gave the field a vocabulary it has been using for fifty years. Lore George Stiny was a graduate student at UCLA's School of Architecture when he developed shape grammars in collaboration with the philosopher James Gips. The two had met as undergraduates at MIT and continued the collaboration despite Stiny's move to UCLA. Their joint paper "Shape Grammars and the Generative Specification of Painting and Sculpture" was published in 1971 in the proceedings of the IFIP Congress in Ljubljana — the same Yugoslav congress that had presented several of the early Stuttgart computer-art works. Stiny eventually held a chair at MIT Architecture for over thirty years; Gips spent his career at Boston College. The two co-authored further work into the 2000s.
