William Mapan (Guillaume Lemieux) — William Mapan — Anticyclone and generative painting aesthetics

Artists: William Mapan (Guillaume Lemieux) · Year: 2022 · Medium: Generative art with hand-painted aesthetic — p5.js compositions that emulate physical-painting surface qualities · Substrate: p5.js generators simulating paint flow, color mixing, and painterly surface texture · Place: France · Institution: Art Blocks Curated William Mapan (Guillaume Carrier), a French generative artist based in Paris, released Anticyclone on Art Blocks Curated in July 2022 as a 1,000-token generative-art project. Each Anticyclone piece is a procedurally-generated landscape composition — a horizon, a cloud formation, an atmospheric color gradient — rendered in Mapan's painterly-algorithmic vocabulary. The pieces are organized around the algorithmic production of specific "weather" conditions; each token is, in effect, a different atmospheric event. Anticyclone is in this archive because it represents a specific mature articulation of what Art Blocks Curated (the high-end curated tier of the Art Blocks platform) had become by 2022. The curatorial selection criteria had, by that year, become rigorous enough that the projects released through Art Blocks Curated represent a specifically-chosen subset of the generative-art practice of the period. Anticyclone was one of the particularly-well-received 2022 Art Blocks Curated releases and established Mapan as one of the distinctive formal voices of the platform's second year. Mapan's broader practice has included additional Art Blocks projects, personal NFT releases through Feral File and other platforms, and sustained gallery-shown work in Paris through 2023-25. His specific aesthetic — a painterly, atmospheric, emotionally-subdued vocabulary that is recognizably distinct from most other contemporary generative-art work — has positioned him as one of the formally-sophisticated European voices of the 2022-25 generative-art moment. What Mapan contributes that matters to this archive is the specifically painterly quality of his work. The 2022-era Art Blocks scene was heavily dominated by geometric-abstract and color-field aesthetics; Mapan's landscape-atmospheric vocabulary was genuinely distinctive, and subsequent generative artists have engaged with it as a specific reference point. Lore William Mapan (Guillaume Carrier) was born in 1992 in the Loire Valley region of France and trained in graphic design at the École de Design Nantes Atlantique before moving to Paris for design work in his early twenties. He had been making generative work as a hobby for several years before the 2022 Art Blocks Curated release of Anticyclone, which was his first major commercial NFT engagement. He left agency design work to become a full-time artist on the strength of the Anticyclone proceeds. The two have lived in the Marais district of Paris since 2022. Mapan has refused gallery representation but accepts curated invitations selectively. He turned 33 in 2025.
