The collection — 500 generative editions of Molnár's signature procedural compositions — was sold at a dedicated Sotheby's auction and generated approximately $1.2 million. The proceeds, per Molnár's stated intent, funded her estate and the continuation of her extensive archive's institutional preservation. The release is historically consequential in multiple registers. Molnár had been the most important living first-generation computer artist for several decades by 2022 (her 1968 Interruptions is elsewhere in this archive as one of the canonical early procedural-art pieces). Her 2022 engagement with the NFT primary market represented the first time one of the 1960s Stuttgart-school generation had entered the NFT market in a substantive institutional framework — the Sotheby's sale was curated, catalogued, and institutionally positioned as a major retrospective-adjacent event. The NFT collection itself was produced in collaboration with Martin Grasser, a software engineer who had worked with Molnár on the specific code-translation of her 1960s FORTRAN compositions into 2020s browser-rendered JavaScript. The editions are not digital-only reproductions of her earlier plotter work — they are specifically-generative compositions produced by her 1960s algorithm-systems running on contemporary hardware. The through-line from 1968 to 2022 is technical as well as artistic. Molnár died in December 2023 at 99. The Themes and Variations release is one of her final public gestures, and the financial resources it generated have supported the subsequent institutional preservation of her complete corpus at the Centre Pompidou and DAM Projects archive. Lore Molnár had been skeptical of the NFT market through the 2020-21 period, during which many prior generative-art figures had made their NFT-market debuts; her eventual 2022 engagement was carefully negotiated with Sotheby's and her long-time representation (DAM Projects, Bitforms Gallery) to ensure that the resulting release would be institutional rather than speculative.
