ACM SIGGRAPH — SIGGRAPH at 50 — the computer-graphics conference takes stock
2023
Artists: ACM SIGGRAPH · Year: 2023 · Medium: Conference / retrospective programming · Substrate: SIGGRAPH 2023 — 50th anniversary edition, 6–10 August 2023, Los Angeles Convention Center · Place: Los Angeles, USA · Institution: ACM SIGGRAPH The Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics (SIGGRAPH) held its fiftieth annual conference in August 2023 in Los Angeles. The anniversary programming included substantial historical retrospectives: the original 1974 conference (Boulder, Colorado, 600 attendees) and its trajectory through the rendering-equation papers of the 1980s, the RenderMan and Pixar dominance of the 1990s, the GPU-shading revolution of the 2000s, and the deep-learning and neural-rendering wave of the 2010s-20s. For digital art, SIGGRAPH has been the technical-community venue where most of the substrate of computational image-making has been first published — Catmull's subdivision surfaces, Reeves's particle systems, Perlin's noise, Kajiya's rendering equation, Hanrahan's shading languages, and the long sequence of work that made first photorealism, then non-photorealism, then generative neural rendering possible. The 50th-anniversary archive, prepared by the SIGGRAPH History Committee, made much of this material publicly accessible for the first time. The 2023 edition itself was substantively shaped by the generative-AI moment: technical papers on diffusion-model rendering and neural radiance fields dominated the program, the Art Gallery included substantial AI-image-and-video work, and the long-running Electronic Theater and Computer Animation Festival programs included substantively more AI-generated material than in prior years. The conference also hosted policy panels on training-data and authorship questions. This archive credits SIGGRAPH 2023 as a substantively important institutional moment: the technical community whose substrate underpins all digital image-making formally taking stock of fifty years of practice at exactly the moment the field was being substantively reshaped by generative AI. Lore SIGGRAPH was founded in 1969 as a special interest group within ACM; the first standalone conference was in 1974. The Computer Animation Festival has continuously juried CG work since 1985 and is one of the most-cited festival circuits for short-form computational-image work. The History Committee's work has been substantially led by Carl Machover (1927-2012) and successors; the 50th-anniversary archive built on decades of his collecting. The conference's location alternates roughly between Los Angeles, San Francisco, Anaheim, and other West Coast venues; SIGGRAPH Asia, founded in 2008, runs separately in November-December each year in Asian cities.
