Artists: Yuga Labs — Greg Solano, Wylie Aronow, Kerem Atalay, Zeshan Ali · Year: 2021 · Medium: 10,000 algorithmically-generated cartoon-ape PFP NFTs with traits-based rarity system · Substrate: Ethereum; ERC-721; mint price 0.08 ETH; complete sellout within approximately 12 hours · Place: Miami, Florida, USA · Institution: Yuga Labs The Bored Ape Yacht Club launched on April 23, 2021, a collection of 10,000 algorithmically-generated cartoon apes with trait-based rarity (fur, eyes, clothes, accessories, backgrounds), minted on Ethereum by the four co-founders of Yuga Labs. The initial mint price was 0.08 ETH (approximately $190 at the time); the full collection sold out within approximately 12 hours. Within six months, floor prices had risen to the tens of ETH; within a year, to hundreds. At peak (spring 2022), BAYC was the highest-floor-price PFP collection on Ethereum. BAYC is the PFP (profile-picture) phenomenon in its most canonical form. The collection's model — 10,000 generated variants with trait-based rarity, a branded community identity, visible on-social-media ownership via Twitter/Discord profile pictures — became the template for hundreds of subsequent PFP projects. Yuga Labs extended the franchise through Mutant Apes, Bored Ape Kennel Club, ApeCoin, Otherside (their metaverse project), and the 2022 acquisition of CryptoPunks IP from Larva Labs. The community of BAYC holders — which included celebrity owners including Jimmy Fallon, Madonna, Steph Curry, Post Malone, and many others — became, in 2021 and 2022, one of the most visible NFT communities in mainstream culture. The brand normalized NFT-based collectibles beyond the art-world contexts that had preceded them. Critically: BAYC is not primarily art. It is a branded collectible community with strong economics. Its inclusion in this archive is as a cultural phenomenon, not as artistic achievement. Lore Yuga Labs' founders operated pseudonymously (as Gordon Goner, Gargamel, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, and No Sass) for the first year of the company's existence; their real names were revealed in a 2022 BuzzFeed investigation, causing significant community controversy. The ApeCoin token launch in March 2022 was a major additional commercial event. The Otherside metaverse project's 2022 land-sale event caused network congestion similar to CryptoKitties' 2017 event.
