To take credit for a crack, groups began adding a short animated intro to the beginning of the pirated game — a "cracktro" — that displayed the group's name in graphical style before the game booted. Cracktros got more elaborate. Rival groups competed to outdo each other's visual effects. By the mid-1980s, the cracktro was the point, and the pirated game it preceded was the excuse. Out of that competition grew the demoscene: a loose international subculture of programmers who write real-time audiovisual "demos" — short programs that generate music and graphics on the fly, squeezed into tight memory and CPU budgets on fixed hardware. The demoscene runs on party circuits. Assembly in Helsinki, Revision in Germany, Evoke, Breakpoint, the Gathering. Groups prepare for months and release demos at the parties to be judged by peers. A four-kilobyte demo can produce eight minutes of original music, full 3D scenes, and real-time text effects, all generated at runtime from the four thousand bytes of executable. The demoscene is, in sheer output, the largest generative-art practice that has ever existed. Tens of thousands of demos, produced over more than forty years, archived exhaustively at scene.org and demozoo.org. It invented, ahead of mainstream adoption, almost every technique that now shows up in real-time shaders, generative music, and procedural graphics: noise functions, raymarching, tracker-based music, GPU parallax, the entire lexicon of what is now called creative coding. It was officially recognized. In 2020 the demoscene was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage register of Finland, and in 2021 to Germany's. An artistic practice that began as copy-protection joke-intros is now protected as heritage by two nation-states. The NFT-era generative art scene, Art Blocks included, owes the demoscene more than it has acknowledged. Many of the best-known contemporary generative coders learned their craft in the demoscene before crypto existed. The debt runs deep and is largely unpaid. Lore Cracker groups who pirated games on the Commodore 64 began inserting short animated intros — 'cracktros' — to take credit before the title screen. By the mid-80s, the cracktro overshadowed the crack: groups were competing to make the most visually impressive intro, and the game itself was just a delivery vehicle. That competition detached from piracy and became the demoscene — a cultural practice of writing real-time audio-visual 'demos' that squeeze impossible effects out of fixed hardware. It's the largest uncredited ancestor of modern generative and shader art. The demoscene was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage registers of Finland (2020) and Germany (2021). Almost none of the original practitioners are named in the NFT conversation.
