The film was produced at Bell Labs for educational distribution and shows computer-simulated objects — masses, springs, pendulums — obeying Newton's equations in real-time simulated motion. Sinden wrote the underlying physics simulation, the Calcomp-plotter animation pipeline, and the film's narration. Force, Mass and Motion is often cited as one of the first serious educational applications of computer animation, and among the earliest films produced by the Bell Labs computer-graphics research group. It predates Knowlton's more artistic BEFLIX-era films by roughly a year and represents a different tradition within the same lab — computer graphics as scientific visualization rather than as aesthetic production. The distinction is blurred in retrospect: Sinden's simulations are visually striking, his choice of what to show is conceptual rather than engineering-determined, and the film's influence on subsequent computer-animation practice was substantial. The film was distributed widely through the 1960s and 1970s as a high school and college physics teaching aid. Copies reached hundreds of American universities and several international educational networks. It is one of the quieter but more widely-seen Bell Labs computer-graphics outputs of the period. Sinden's subsequent career at Bell Labs continued in scientific visualization; he did not pursue an independent art practice, and his body of work is preserved principally through the Bell Labs Technical Memoranda archive. Lore Sinden was a Bell Labs staff engineer rather than a primarily-artistic figure; his interest in computer-animated physics came from teaching concerns about how undergraduates visualized Newtonian dynamics. The film was shown at the 1965 Joint Mathematics Meetings and received substantial coverage in educational-film circles. Later Bell Labs educational films — by Knowlton, Mathews, and others — built on the production infrastructure Sinden had helped establish.
