Moog Co. Robert Moog presented his first voltage-controlled modular synthesizer in 1964 at the Audio Engineering Society convention in New York. The prototype had been built with Herbert Deutsch, a Hofstra music professor who had asked Moog the previous year whether the transistorized theremin kits Moog was selling could be adapted to make a flexible electronic instrument. The reply was the Moog modular: oscillators, filters, amplifiers, and envelope generators arranged as physically separate panels, connected by patch cords, each controlled by a common voltage standard (a volt per octave for pitch, nominal gate voltages for trigger). The voltage-controlled architecture is the part that matters for this archive. Before Moog, electronic studios — the WDR in Cologne, the RAI in Milan, Columbia-Princeton in New York — were warehouse-scale rooms full of one-off equipment, none of it interoperable. A composer needing a specific sound would often have to hand-build or borrow a circuit. What Moog and Deutsch demonstrated was that every musically relevant parameter — pitch, amplitude, timbre, attack — could be driven by a voltage, and that voltages could be patched like wires. Any module could control any other. A sequence of notes could be written as a chain of voltage steps. A timbre could be modulated by the envelope of another sound. This is, operationally, the same move that makes a computer a computer: decouple the data representation from the process, so any process can consume any data. The Moog did it for sound, two decades before the Yamaha DX7 made digital synthesis cheap and a full generation before software synthesizers made it universal. The 1968 release of Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach, made on a Moog modular, carried the new instrument into public consciousness; by the mid-1970s the modular synthesizer was on every serious pop record, and by 1980 an entire generation of commercial instruments — the Minimoog, the ARP 2600, the Roland System 100 — were refinements of Moog's 1964 spec. Every software synthesizer since traces its signal-flow model back through the patch-cable logic of this prototype. Lore Moog and Deutsch built the first prototype in a converted chicken coop behind Moog's house in Trumansburg, New York. The company that made the modular — R.A. Moog Co. — was a mail-order electronics business Bob Moog had started in high school to sell theremin kits. He was a graduate student in engineering physics at Cornell when the Deutsch conversation happened. The first modular was sold to the Alwin Nikolais Dance Theatre in 1964 for $1,400. Moog himself was famously modest about credit, insisting for decades that the real invention was Deutsch's; Deutsch, in turn, always returned the credit. The two remained friends until Moog's death in 2005.
