The piece launched in 1994 at Randolph Street Gallery in Chicago, and its online component has remained accessible in various forms ever since. Early contributions came from scholars, journalists, and artists worldwide; contemporary contributions continue to arrive. The piece's historical significance is as one of the earliest artworks to treat a web database as its primary medium. Before The File Room, artists had used the web as a display surface for other kinds of work; Muntadas treated the database itself — the structure of public-contributable records, the search and access mechanisms, the ongoing growth of the archive — as the artwork. This is a different artistic proposition than the conventional web-page-as-artwork approach, and its conceptual framework has influenced subsequent web-native-database practice. Muntadas is a Spanish-born artist who has worked primarily in New York since the 1970s, with a long practice across video, installation, and network-based art.
