Lisa Orth — Suspended Pathways and the Sub Pop / generative through-line
2022
Artists: Lisa Orth · Year: 2022 · Medium: Long-form generative art — algorithmic abstract linework with a fine-line / engraving sensibility · Substrate: Processing and p5.js; Tezos via fx(hash) and Objkt · Place: Los Angeles, USA (originally Seattle) · Institution: fx(hash); Objkt; Verse Lisa Orth's biography is the kind of generative-art lineage that rarely gets recorded in the field's standard histories: she was the first official Art Director at Sub Pop in late-1980s Seattle and designed early Nirvana album artwork, including type and layout treatments associated with the label's foundational visual identity. She founded Big Flaming Ego Records in 1990, releasing early work by The Gits, Hammerbox, and Common Language. She apprenticed in tattooing in 2007 (mentored by Owen Connell), developing a fine-line woodcut-and-engraving aesthetic that ran her tattoo practice on Capitol Hill in Seattle through the 2010s. The 2015 documentary Lesbian Mayor: The Lisa Orth Story (dir. Arwen Nicks) tracks part of that career. She entered the NFT space in 2020, largely self-taught as a creative coder via design-agency work, and built her on-chain practice on Processing and p5.js. The aesthetic transferred surprisingly cleanly: the same fine-line, engraving-like discipline that ran through her tattoo work shaped her algorithmic linework. Suspended Pathways, released in 2022 on fx(hash) and Objkt with documented color variants (Aqua 00a, Golden), and aether: Astral Loom — a 130+-token fx(hash) project — frame the post-2020 practice. Verse's Generative Abstraction Part II and inclusion in The Generative Art Museum extend the institutional record. The through-line is what makes the practice significant inside this archive: Orth's career sits across underground music-graphic culture, fine-line tattoo, and on-chain generative art as a single continuous design practice rather than as separate chapters. The on-chain field's tendency to historicize itself as an essentially-2021 phenomenon repeatedly fails to capture this kind of lineage, in which generative art is the latest iteration of a forty-year design career. Lore Orth's connection to the early Sub Pop and Nirvana visual identity is widely documented in music-design history but rarely surfaces in generative-art profiles, partly because the generative-art field has been weaker than it should be at integrating its practitioners' pre-NFT careers into its own historiography. The fine-line discipline that runs through Suspended Pathways is the same discipline that ran through her tattoo work for fifteen years before she wrote her first p5.js program.
