Michael Noll's 1965 four-dimensional hypercube film is, along with his computer-generated ballet from the same year, among the earliest examples of time-based computer-generated art that attempts to visualize something otherwise impossible to see. The film shows a four-dimensional hypercube — the tesseract — rotating in 4-space and projected into 3D, then into 2D. Because the film was intended to be viewed stereoscopically, Noll generated two offset frames per moment, allowing the viewer with the appropriate apparatus to perceive the hypercube as a three-dimensional object moving through its own fourth-dimensional rotation. This is a substantially harder problem than Noll's plotter drawings. Rotating a four-dimensional object and projecting it through two levels of dimensional reduction requires a well-specified mathematical model of the hypercube, a rotation routine in 4-space, and a projection pipeline that preserves visual coherence across frames. Noll worked it all out himself, in FORTRAN, at Bell Labs on evenings and weekends. The film was completed in 1965 and has been shown occasionally at Bell Labs historical exhibitions since. The film predates by seven years Mohr's Cubic Limit series, which would take the same mathematical object and build a lifetime's work from it. Noll's hypercube film is the earlier, quieter demonstration — an engineering-minded proof that the hypercube could be visualized at all. Mohr's project is the sustained artistic development of the proof. Lore A. Noll worked at Bell Labs from 1961 through 1971 and held a faculty position at the USC Annenberg School from 1971 through his retirement decades later. His wife Ruth Noll has been his consistent personal archivist; the couple has lived in Pacific Palisades for over forty years. Noll has maintained correspondence with virtually every other Bell Labs alumnus from the 1960s — Knowlton, Mathews, Schwartz, Harmon — across the decades, and his memoir-essays have been one of the primary documentary sources for subsequent histories.
