(SGI) Silicon Graphics, Inc. was founded in 1981 by Stanford computer-graphics professor James H. Clark and a small team of his graduate students (notably Marc Hannah, who would design the company's flagship Geometry Engine). The first product, the IRIS 1000, shipped in 1984: a Motorola 68000-based UNIX workstation with a custom VLSI graphics pipeline that could perform real-time 3D-coordinate transformations on geometry data — a capability that, in 1984, no other commercially available computer could match. Through the late 1980s and across the 1990s, SGI workstations became the defining hardware of Hollywood visual-effects production. The IRIS 4D, Indigo, Onyx, Crimson, and InfiniteReality systems powered the visual effects of nearly every major American studio film of the era: Terminator 2 (1991), Jurassic Park (1993), Toy Story (1995, on a render farm of 117 SGI machines), Twister (1996), Titanic (1997). The price point — workstations ranged from $15,000 for entry-level Indys to $250,000+ for InfiniteReality systems — meant that real-time 3D graphics access was institutional rather than personal, and SGI was the dominant institutional supplier. What SGI matters for in this archive is the bridging role. The same hardware that produced Pixar's Luxo Jr. produced Char Davies's Osmose VR; the same Onyx that rendered Jurassic Park rendered the Vasulkas' late video-synthesis work and Jeffrey Shaw's Legible City. SGI hardware was the substrate of high-end 1990s computer art across the entire technical-art-cinema spectrum. The company's eventual decline (it filed for bankruptcy in 2009, having been overtaken by commodity PC hardware running PC graphics cards) closes one of the most consequential institutional-hardware chapters in this archive's coverage. Clark went on to co-found Netscape Communications (1994), Healtheon (1996), and several subsequent ventures; he is widely considered the most successful Silicon Valley serial entrepreneur of his generation. Hannah continued at SGI through the 1990s and is currently retired. The original Geometry Engine technology lineage runs forward through current GPU architectures. Lore Marc Hannah was the only Black founder of a major Silicon Valley graphics-hardware company in the 1980s and remains one of the most-cited computer-graphics architects of the era. He earned his PhD at Stanford under Clark. Hannah's work on the Geometry Engine — which performed in custom silicon what general-purpose CPUs of the period could not do at all — established the rendering-pipeline architecture that current NVIDIA and AMD GPUs still substantially follow. Clark's exit from SGI to found Netscape in 1994 was not friendly; SGI's leadership at the time considered the move a betrayal. The IRIS 4D Indy workstation, with its distinctive blue chassis, became iconic enough that several were used as set dressing in 1990s films — most famously Jurassic Park, where the Indy workstations on the InGen control-room set were rendering the same dinosaur sequences that the production was using SGI hardware to produce.
