Battleship Potemkin introduced

Mark Kermode introduces Eisenstein's 1925 film for the BFI, including the Odessa Steps sequence and its long afterlife. The film was commissioned for a revolutionary anniversary, and its most famous scene is a construction rather than a record - a massacre staged on those steps as it is remembered, not as it happened. That gap between invented image and public memory is the clearest single lesson in the archive.
