What propaganda is
NOV 04 2021
The philosopher Jason Stanley gives a working definition of propaganda: an appeal that trades on an ideal - freedom, safety, fairness - in order to undermine that same ideal. The definition is useful because it does not depend on the claim being false, which is why so much effective propaganda survives fact-checking intact. A short conceptual foundation for recognising it in ordinary political speech.
