Olympia: Festival of Nations

Leni Riefenstahl's record of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, released in 1938 and financed by the Nazi state, opens with a prologue that dissolves classical statuary into living athletes. The persuasion is entirely formal: slow motion, low angles, tracking pits dug beside the track, and a montage that makes the athletic body monumental, so a regime buys the prestige of antiquity and of international sport without asserting a single political claim. It is kept here as a canonical study object in film history, and should be watched as the work of a state that was already persecuting the people it excluded from that image.
