Zog remains a contested figure in Albanian memory

Zog is judged both as the founder of modern Albanian statehood and as an authoritarian who mortgaged the country to Fascist Italy. The case for him rests on the national currency, the secular civil code, the road network and the first functioning central administration. The case against rests on suppressed civil liberties, a failed land reform that protected his own class, political assassination, and the Italian financial and military penetration that ended in occupation. Both readings are held by serious historians and neither is settled. The 2012 state repatriation of his remains, conducted by a republican government, is itself evidence of a partial official rehabilitation rather than a resolution of the argument.
