Sadije Toptani, mother and Toptani connection

Zog's mother Sadije Toptani came from the Toptani family, one of the dominant landowning households of the Tirana region. The marriage linked the highland Zogolli of Mat to central Albanian landed interests, a connection that later mattered to Zogu's political base. Her family produced Essad Pasha Toptani, a rival Albanian power-broker of the same period.
