Zogu's detention in Vienna from 1917 coincided with the period in which Austria-Hungary's Albanian policy collapsed. He was a tribal ally who had become inconvenient, held rather than imprisoned in the criminal sense. He returned to Vienna as a reigning king in 1931, the visit on which he was shot at outside the opera.
